Writing for M3 Interfaces

Good UI writing is invisible — users accomplish their goals without noticing the words. Material Design 3 establishes voice principles, specific guidelines for common UI text patterns, and content structure strategies that keep interfaces clear, concise, and accessible.

Direct

Use direct, declarative language. Talk to users, not at them. Avoid passive voice and unnecessary filler words.

Do
  • Turn on Location Services to find nearby restaurants
  • Your download is complete
  • Delete this conversation?
Don't
  • Location Services can be enabled to facilitate the discovery of proximate dining establishments
  • The download process has been completed successfully
  • Are you sure you want to delete this conversation? This action cannot be undone. Please confirm.

Concise

Use as few words as possible without sacrificing clarity. People scan interfaces — every word should earn its place. Front-load the most important information.

Do
  • No internet connection
  • 3 updates available
  • Undo
Don't
  • It appears that your device is currently unable to connect to the internet
  • There are currently 3 updates that are available for download
  • Undo last action

Friendly

Use a warm, approachable tone without being overly casual or cute. Avoid exclamation marks in error messages. Use contractions naturally (it's, don't, can't).

Do
  • Welcome back
  • Can't connect to the server. Try again later.
  • You're all set
Don't
  • Greetings, user!
  • ERROR: Connection to server has failed!!!
  • Setup process complete. You may now proceed.

Helpful

When something goes wrong, explain what happened and offer a clear next step. Don't just state the problem — guide users toward resolution.

Do
  • Can't save your photo. Free up storage in Settings > General > Storage.
  • This file is too large. The maximum size is 25 MB.
  • Verification code sent to your email
Don't
  • Save failed
  • File too large
  • A verification process has been initiated

Inclusive

Use gender-neutral language. Avoid idioms, slang, and culturally specific references. Write for a global, diverse audience. Use 'they' as a singular pronoun.

Do
  • Ask a friend to share their screen
  • Set up your device
  • Enter your name
Don't
  • Ask a friend to share his or her screen
  • Hey bro, let's get this puppy set up!
  • What's your Christian name?
